Wire Fraud
Wire Fraud Alert in Real Estate
Yesterday, a client called me from his bank and said: “The bank told me I should call you.”
At first, I was puzzled. He explained that he needed clarification on wiring instructions for over $1,000,000.
My immediate response: “What wiring instructions? I never sent you any.”
That’s when it clicked—he was the target of a wire fraud scheme.
I told him firmly: “Get out of the bank right now. That was NOT me.”
Why this matters
Wire fraud is one of the biggest threats in real estate transactions today. Criminals impersonate agents, lenders, or title companies and send fake wiring instructions—hoping to steal deposits, down payments, or entire purchase funds.
Once the money is gone, it’s often impossible to recover.
Protect yourself:
1. Always confirm wiring instructions directly with your agent or title company—by phone or in person.
2. I NEVER email wiring instructions!!!
3. Never trust last-minute changes to wiring information.
4. Verify email addresses carefully.
5. Slow down. If something feels “off,” It most certainly is!
Real estate should give you peace of mind—not sleepless nights. That’s why I remind all my clients: if you ever receive unexpected wiring instructions, call me immediately before moving a single dollar.
